I used water-driven reels for years. They never lasted very long. I bought the McNaught reel last spring and have been delighted. I mounted it on a short 4x4 post and it stays out of the way and ready for use. I have several air hose and electrical reels in my woodshop. I love them. Finally someone has used similar technology for water hoses. Pull out some hose and soon you'll hear some clicks. As you pull the hose out more, there are more clicks. When you have enough hose, stop pulling when you hear the clicks and the hose stays put. To rewind, pull out a few more feet to get past the clicks and it easily feeds the hose back into the reel. This reel works as well today as it did when it was new. Yes, it's a bit pricey but so much better than the hand crank or water-driven reels. I do wish they made one that could handle 3/4" hose. Hint.... hint....
